A Dental Exam is More Than Just Teeth and Gums
A professional dental examination goes beyond just evaluating your teeth and gums; it’s just as important for a dentist to understand your oral hygiene habits and lifestyle habits for recommendations, tips, or guidance on improving your oral health.
All teeth are evaluated to ensure they are free of cavities. The gums and surrounding bone are checked for periodontal disease. Your fillings, crowns, and other previous dental work are also examined for defects or damage.
Are you taking medications? Do you smoke? Do you snore? Have you considered certain cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening or straightening? These are the kinds of questions your dentist will be able to discuss with you during a dental examination in order for you to find out how to better not just your oral health, but your overall health. Don’t hesitate to ask the dentist any questions you may have!

During your appointment, a hygienist will use a state-of-the-art dental instrument to clean plaque off your teeth that it doesn’t harden into tartar, which can create serious problems if not removed.
The hygienist will follow up by polishing your teeth with a high-tech brush to take care of any stains on your teeth. The hygienist will also show you some professional brushing and flossing techniques that you can use at home.
Dental X-rays Provide Advanced Feedback
Dental X-rays may be taken of your teeth at various angles to provide insight on what could not be determined from simply looking and feeling the inside of your mouth. Consider x-rays a tool that allows dentists to go “behind the scenes” of your teeth.
Using X-ray imaging, your dentist is further able to check for tooth decay, infections, tumors, and proper teeth positioning. Once the dentist has completed the exam, he or she can accurately develop a dental care plan that is specifically personalized for you.
Routine Dental Care
The American Dental Hygienists’ Association recommends patients receive a thorough, comprehensive dental exam roughly every 6 months* as part of a routine dental checkup. This gives the dentist an opportunity to detect problems early on before they have a chance to spiral out of control.
At the end of the day, a professional dental teeth cleaning and exam can keep you healthier and maintain your beautiful smile. The first step is up to you, please call 512.346.1900 to make your appointment today.
