Dental Bridges in Austin
Dental bridges are tooth replacements designed to literally “bridge” or fill the gap created by one or more teeth. The replacement tooth, known as pontic, is usually anchored to the adjacent natural teeth - one one or both sides - using dental crowns. For large spaces, the bridge may be supported by implants.
What to Expect
At Great Grins Dental in Austin, we provide different types of bridges to fill the gaps in your mouth. Dr. Fossum will help you choose the right option for your specific situation from the following:
1. Traditional bridges
The pontic is supported by the adjacent natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap via crowns. These are very popular, and are fabricated from ceramics or porcelain-fused-to-metal
2. Cantilever bridges
Here, the pontic is anchored to only one tooth. It could be used where one of the adjacent teeth is not healthy enough to support a crown. Usually some of the tooth enamel has to be removed before placing the crown to support the pontic. If only one adjacent tooth has enough tooth structure, then a cantilever bridge might be a viable option for you. The replacement tooth is, however, not recommended for back teeth due to the chewing forces.
3. Maryland bonded bridges
Also referred to as resin-bonded bridges, Maryland dental bridges comprise porcelain, plastic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal pontics and gums attached to porcelain or metal wings that are anchored to the existing teeth on one side of the gap.
Are Dental Bridges Right for You?
Dr. Fossum may recommend dental bridges to fill a gap and:
- Restore your ability to speak and chew properly
- Allow for proper distribution of bite forces to reduce stress on the remaining teeth
- Prevent the remaining teeth from shifting or drifting
- Prevent bone tissue resorption and maintain the shape of your face
- Restore the beauty of your smile
During your first visit to Great Grins Dental, Dr. Fossum will prepare take impressions of your teeth to aid in the fabrication of your custom dental bridge. You will wear a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums until the permanent bridge replacement is ready for placement on your second visit.
