What are Removable Dentures?
Removable dental prostheses refer to dental restorations that are not permanently fixed and can be removed by the patient at will. At Great Grins Dental, we provide complete and partial dentures, which are one of the most popular ways that patients in Austin choose to replace one or more missing teeth.
As removable dental prostheses, dentures are held in place by the tissues and muscles in the oral cavity. They are not intended to be worn 24/7. In fact, you should remove your dentures every day before going to bed, and clean and store them properly so they don’t break.
Why Use Dentures?
Dentures have been in use for centuries. And even with advancements in dental technology and new ways to replace missing teeth, dentures are as popular as ever, largely because they are a non-invasive and do not require any surgical procedure or painful recovery during placement.
Dentures have also improved significantly as removable dental prosthesis. Unlike the earlier appliances that were plagued with complaints of poor fit, slipping, and discomfort, modern dentures are made using high quality materials and precise custom-fitting technology to ensure a perfect and comfortable fit.
Different Types of Removables
When it comes to replacing missing teeth, there are several options to consider, including dental implants and bridges. Although these permanent treatments have a high success rate, some patients may not be interested in them because they involve surgery (implants) and long recovery time, or they involve damaging some of the healthy natural teeth remaining to support the bridge.
In such cases, Dr. Fossum can recommend complete dentures or partial dentures.
- Complete dentures - These removables are intended to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower arch. Can be used for aging people who have lost all their teeth, or patients who have had all their decayed or damaged teeth extracted. Complete dentures are custom-made to fit perfectly, and so they are only placed when the gums are fully healed, following teeth removal. In the meantime, Dr. Fossum will place immediate dentures to help you eat and drink normally for several weeks as your gums heal.
- Partial dentures - These removables are ideal for patients with one or a few missing teeth. The replacement tooth is attached to a gum-colored plastic base that is connected to an internal attachment that will hold the partial in place after it has been fixed in the gap. These metal attachments are designed to latch onto adjacent teeth so the partial won’t shift or fall out after placement.

At Great Grins Dental in Austin, Dr. Fossum recommends the use of removables for patients who do not want to undergo any additional procedures for replacing one or more missing teeth, but still need to fill the gap to restore proper function of the mouth, for aesthetics, or to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.
Whether you choose partial or full dentures, using a removable can also help to maintain muscle tone that would gradually diminish after tooth loss. The loss of soft tissues and the underlying bone tissue after bone loss can cause your face/cheeks to shrink and appear old or grumpy. Dentures can help to reverse this process by lifting your facial tissues, which would in turn boost your confidence and self-esteem.
