I
just had an Extraction...
POST-OP
SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
Bleeding
- Apply pressure with a folded gauze on the extraction site
for approximately 2 hours after surgery to prevent excessive
bleeding and to help promote the healing blood clot. Bleeding
may appear to be more than it actually is due to increased
saliva flow. Change gauze as needed until bleeding stops.
If after 2 hours bleeding persists, try biting on a moistened
tea bag and/or applying and ice bag to cheek with head elevated
on 2 pillows.
Swelling
- To help minimize any swelling, place an ice pack on cheek
20 minutes on and 20 minutes off through out the day following
surgery. Do not use external heat unless directed.
AVOID
CARBONATED DRINKS, ALCOHOL, SMOKING, PEROXIDE, RINSING YOUR
MOUTH OR USING A STRAW FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS.
Rinsing
- After the first 24 hours following surgery, rinse your
mouth twice daily with warm salt water (8oz. warm water
with 1 tsp. salt ). Continue this for 1 week.
Diet
- Do not skip meals. For your comfort, cool liquids and
soft foods should be taken for the first 36 hours. Gradually
progress to your regular diet.
Oral
hygiene - Continue to brush and floss daily being extra
gentle near the extraction site.
Medication
- Continue taking all prescribed medication as directed.
Sutures
- If sutures are placed, they will need to be removed in
7 to 10 days.
Rule
of Thumb - You should notice improvement in your condition
each day.
If
you are not feeling better after 2-3 days or have any questions,
please call our office.
